It seems like a parody of a celebrity endorsement, but it's apparently completely serious. Top Chef Host Padma Lakshmi has been an enthusiastic supporter of Vice President Kamala Harris, arguing that her amateur cooking skills prove she could be a “great” president.
Padma Lakshmi sprinkles a thick layer of identity politics with fragrant wishful thinking. The New York Times The op-ed was published on Saturday. Interestingly, her piece makes no mention at all of rising food prices, which is by far a top concern for home cooks and an issue high on voters' minds heading into November.
Instead, Lakshmi spins a warm metaphor that paints Kamala Harris as the ultimate nutritionist, then stretches the metaphor to its limits.
“Her way of talking about food and food access is a way of opening doors and building consensus about who Americans are,” she wrote, noting that the vice president's kitchen prowess would translate to the Oval Office.
“Cooking well requires organizational skills, attention to detail, patience and a willingness to bring people together. In a divided country, these are the qualities that will make Harris a good, even great, president.”
“In her cooking, Harris demonstrates qualities this country desperately needs: care and the ability to tell a new kind of story about what it means to be an American,” Lakshmi wrote, adding, “I want a president who is committed to nurturing and nourishing all Americans.”
Lakshmi's Times The op-ed is the latest attempt by celebrities to define Harris as a “likable” candidate as Democratic elites and their media allies shield her from substantive criticism of record-high consumer prices and unprecedented levels of illegal immigration under her administration.
Her op-ed makes no mention of rising food prices, which continue to hurt tens of millions of American families. Under the Biden-Harris administration, food prices have risen by more than 21% to the highest level in nearly 50 years.
Recent Financial Times According to the poll, 78% of voters said food inflation was a major drag on their financial situation.
