Kansas AG calls for investigation into energy lawsuits backed by China

Investigation into Funding of Environmental Law Campaign

The Kansas Attorney General has requested that the Department of Justice (DOJ) look into the financing of a recent initiative known as the “environmental law campaign.” According to Chris Kobach, the Attorney General, there are indications that the Chinese government is financially supporting lawsuits in the U.S. aimed at undermining the energy sector.

Kobach points to the Energy Foundation China, a nonprofit based in San Francisco with deep ties in Beijing, as a potential funder of these lawsuits. He raises concerns that this organization is promoting actions that align with China’s strategic interests—namely, enhancing alternative energy systems while managing vital supply chains related to minerals and energy technologies.

“It’s not surprising, really,” Kobach asserts, stating that the EFC’s support seems to mesh with China’s aims. He emphasized the urgent need for the DOJ to investigate any foreign influence that could be affecting the American economy.

This letter comes on the heels of Kobach’s testimony last month before the Senate Judiciary Committee, where he addressed this very issue. Senator Ted Cruz from Texas spearheaded a hearing entitled “Enter the Dragon – Left Laws on the Control of China and America.” In his remarks, Cruz highlighted the critical role the U.S. energy sector plays in national security and economic independence, warning that challenges to American energy equate to threats against both security and autonomy.

Fox News Digital has reached out to the DOJ for a response.
