A high school football player in Kansas has died just days after suffering a medical emergency, according to multiple reports.
KMBC reported A Shawnee Mission Northwest High School football player died Friday after suffering an unexplained medical emergency following an offseason training session Wednesday.
An email sent to students and their families on Friday identified the deceased football player as sophomore Orvet Gomez Regalado.
Reported by KSHB He was 15 years old.
“Death is always difficult to accept, but especially when it is a young person,” wrote Principal Dr. Lisa Gurman, according to KMBC. “It’s important to recognize that we all need time to accept what has happened and to express our feelings. Your child may have a hard time making sense of this death. Encourage your child to express their feelings and talk together about what has happened.”
Additionally, a statement was released by the Shawnee Mission Northwest Football Booster Club following Gomez Regalado’s passing.
“Our football family has suffered the tragedy of losing one of our own,” the statement read. “This morning we were informed of the passing of Obet Gomez Regalado. Our hearts go out to his family, teammates and coaches. We know many of you want to support his family and find ways to honor his memory. We will work with the school district to support their efforts and share every opportunity with you.”

The news comes just days after a 14-year-old football player from Alabama collapsed during practice and died suddenly.
The Shawnee Mission Northwest football team was scheduled to begin practice on Monday with an eye on the 2024 season, according to KMBC.
