Kansas Senate President Joins GOP Governor Race
Kansas Senate President Ty Masterson has entered the Republican race, aiming to wrest control of the governor’s office from the Democrats. He describes himself as a “conservative worker and businessman” focused on outcomes.
Interestingly, Kansas has leaned Republican in presidential elections for over five decades. Yet, the governor’s seat is currently held by a Democrat, which—well, that’s not very common.
Secretary of State Also Running
In related news, the Kansas Secretary of State has also announced a bid for the governorship, targeting two other seats currently held by Democrats. Governor Laura Kelly has been in office since early 2019 and is in her second consecutive term, meaning she won’t be eligible for reelection in 2026. That’s per state constitutional guidelines, which limit governors to two consecutive terms.
Masterson’s entry into the race adds another name to a growing list of GOP candidates, joining former Governor Jeff Colyer, Secretary of State Scott Schwab, and Insurance Commissioner Vicki Schmidt.
Challenges Ahead
Colyer, for example, was promoted to governor in 2018 but faced a tough primary challenge from Chris Kobach, the then-Secretary of State. This shows, well, how competitive the political landscape can be, right?
On another note, advocates recently celebrated a legislative decision that overturned a veto aimed at protecting children from gender transition treatments. It’s a complex issue—everyone seems to have a strong opinion about it, and the discussions can get quite heated.
