Karen Bass Reacts Strongly After Border Patrol Detains Individual Without Papers Near Gavin Newsom Event

Los Angeles Mayor Criticizes Timing of Immigration Raids

Democrat Mayor Karen Bass of Los Angeles expressed her discontent on Thursday regarding the timing of immigration arrests made by Border Patrol agents, which coincided with a press conference held by California Governor Gavin Newsom.

The Border Patrol actions occurred in Los Angeles shortly after Newsom spoke at the Japanese-American Museum about special elections in California. During the press event, an NBC4 Los Angeles journalist asked Bass if she thought the arrests were made by accident. “There’s no way this was a coincidence!” she proclaimed. Bass highlighted the attention around the press conferences addressing rezoning, suggesting the raids seemed intentionally timed.

“This is a provocative act,” she continued. “They’re talking about obstacles in Los Angeles, but then they become a source of those very obstacles. This is just completely unacceptable.” Bass emphasized that there was no need for such actions and labeled them as completely unwarranted during the governor’s appearance.

Footage from Fox 11 showed agents detaining at least one individual. Gregory Bovino, chief of California’s El Centro sector Border Patrol, stated the agency was in the area to enhance safety, contending that if politicians failed to act, they would step in. “That’s why we’re here today… we’ve already made it a safer place. We’re happy we’re here. We’re not going anywhere,” Bovino told FOX11.

He further explained that the arrests were part of a regular “roving patrol,” refuting any claims that the location was chosen specifically due to Newsom’s press conference.

During his press conference, Governor Newsom announced the initiation of a state gerrymandering effort aimed at removing around six Republicans from the U.S. House of Representatives, as a response to Texas’ redistricting plans, which he decried as an attempt at “election rigging.”

Californians will vote on November 4th regarding whether to empower state legislatures to alter districts on behalf of an independent committee responsible for creating election maps.

Since June, Los Angeles, a declared sanctuary city, has experienced an uptick in activity from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Border Patrol agents. Recent protests in the downtown area turned chaotic, leading to significant damages as demonstrators clashed.
