Kari Lake slams Senate border deal as ‘complete joke,’ takes swipe at Sinema

Arizona Senate Republican candidate Kari Lake takes a deep dive into the failure of the Senate’s bipartisan border agreement, calling it a “complete joke” and criticizing one of its lead negotiators, Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (Ariz.). criticized.

The Senate’s proposed border security measure, which failed earlier this month due to Republican opposition, was brought up Sunday in a conversation with Fox News “Sunday Morning Futures” anchor Maria Bartiromo, who said the bill “doesn’t secure the border. ‘ he claimed.

“Well, that was a complete joke – I mean the bill – according to Kyrsten Sinema. [an] “The Arizona senator should know better, but she hasn’t spent enough time in Arizona to understand what’s going on,” Lake responded.

Lake, who narrowly lost the 2022 Arizona gubernatorial race to Gov. Katie Hobbs (D), is facing U.S. Rep. Ruben Gallego (D, AZ) in the Senate race. Mr. Sinema has remained largely silent about his own plans, and it is unclear whether he will mount a last-minute bid for the Senate.

The Hill has reached out to Sinema’s office for comment.

The Senate border deal follows months of negotiations led by Sens. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), James Lankford (R-Okla.), and Sinema, who will become an independent in 2022. did. The deal was part of a larger emergency foreign aid package. The plan includes additional aid for Ukraine and Israel’s war effort, as well as Indo-Pacific security, after Senate Republicans insisted that any aid to Ukraine must be tied to border security reform. Ta.

Republicans, backed by former President Trump, launched the policy, which includes major concessions from Democrats on border security.

“They sent me that bill, what? We spent $90 billion, $95 billion overseas killing people, but we actually have a border that stops people from coming across the border. No money was spent building the wall. Zero money was spent on actually enforcing the detention and deportation of these people. They want these people to come,” Lake said. he said on Sunday. “That’s the problem with a lot of Washington, D.C., they want people to flock in. They want cheap labor.”

Lake used the issue Sunday to make a case for former President Trump’s reelection, arguing that it would be “difficult” for Republicans to take significant action on the border with President Biden in the White House.

“We must rally behind him.” [Trump], stop this sideshow that Nikki Haley is trying to do and really focus on President Trump and his great policies,” Lake told Bartiromo. “He will silence this nonsense from day one. I am honored to have his support. He will ensure that I keep America safe, build a border wall, and stop this invasion. You know I want to go to the United States Senate because of that.”

Her remarks came a day after she spoke at the annual Conservative Political Action Conference, which solidified support for President Trump.
