Outrage Over National Anthem Performance at NFL Game in Madrid

NFL fans expressed their anger after the American flag was displayed ahead of Sunday’s international game in Madrid.

Karina Pacián, an American pop singer, sang the U.S. national anthem, followed by the Madrid Marine Infantry Group Band performing the Spanish anthem. This took place right before the kickoff of the matchup between the Washington Commanders and the Miami Dolphins at Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, marking the first NFL game in Spain.

Pacián made quite the impression with her outfit, sporting a black minidress that featured a deep neckline, thigh-high stockings, garters, and elbow-length gloves.

However, her attire didn’t sit well with some fans, who harshly criticized her in the comments under the performance video. Some noted that her outfit detracted from her vocals. One user questioned the choice, saying, “That’s fine, but why did she have to dress like a prostitute?”

Another remarked, “It’s wonderful to share sports with other nations! Karina’s national anthem performance was great, but her outfit? It was a bit much.” They also pointed out that players didn’t kneel during the anthem—at least where cameras could catch it.

One fan felt her voice was lovely, though they found the outfit somewhat inappropriate. Another comment questioned, “Why is she dressed like a cabaret dancer? It strips away the seriousness of the national anthem.”

And another added, “Someone chooses to dress like that for a national anthem? That’s just wrong.”

Despite the criticisms regarding her outfit, many praised her vocals. One enthusiastically stated, “Not many can sing that song well. She really knocked it out of the park!”

Another fan mentioned, “It was cool to see her in the spotlight in Madrid. We needed this moment at an NFL game there. The anthem sounded beautiful; the crowd was completely captivated.”

Pacián, originally from New York City and now residing in Madrid, was selected to perform at this historic game—where the Dolphins edged past the Commanders 16-13 in overtime.

She captured the attention of major record labels at just 13 years old, eventually signing with Def Jam in 2006. Her accolades include a Grammy nomination for Best Contemporary R&B for her song “Can’t Find the Words” and a performance at the White House for President George W. Bush during Black Music Month in 2007.
