Karl-Anthony Towns Reflects on Foul Troubles with Humor
Karl-Anthony Towns recently demonstrated an amusing yet poignant lesson from comedy.
During Jalen Brunson’s monologue on “Saturday Night Live,” Towns quipped, “Can you foul out of ‘SNL?’” This light-hearted jab was a nod to his ongoing struggle with foul trouble last season.
“I feel like every joke has a grain of truth to it, right?” Towns remarked after a practice session with the Knicks on Thursday.
The humor feels all too relevant for the Knicks right now.
In the season-opening game against the 76ers, Towns found himself in early foul trouble, leading to only 23 minutes on the court—just six of which came in the first half. This has continued to be a concerning pattern, as he played a mere 23 minutes in the critical Game 5 of the previous season’s Finals, scoring just two points.
What’s particularly frustrating is that Towns’ fouls often don’t result from aggressive defensive plays; instead, they’re often avoidable fouls racked up on the offensive end.
Head coach Mike Brown has faith in Towns’ abilities and believes he shouldn’t be making those mistakes.
“We discuss this, and to his credit, he improved last season,” Brown stated on Thursday. “This season brings new challenges, and while I don’t expect him to regress, if he does slip a bit, we’ll work through it.”
Brown highlighted a specific example where Towns took an ill-advised shot while attempting to draw a foul—a situation he doesn’t need to seek out. “You’re a perennial All-Star, KAT. Just make the basket,” he advised.
In Towns’ absence during the game, Andre Drummond stepped up during the first half. However, it wasn’t without its challenges, as Drummond seemed to tire in the second half.
Towns’ foul issues have sparked considerable discussion about the Knicks’ depth at center this offseason.
“I definitely don’t want to put my team in tough spots like that,” Towns expressed. “I need to work on this—not just in the regular season, but especially when it counts in the postseason.”
