The Knicks had a rough start to their game, watching a 9-point advantage dwindle to just 4 in a little over two minutes.
After OG Anunoby nailed a 3-pointer and the defense made a crucial stop, Josh Hart took the ball up the court. Karl-Anthony Towns, after a pump fake for a deep shot, was fouled by Alex Sarr with only 0.4 seconds left in the half.
Celebrating while on the ground, Towns got the home crowd at Madison Square Garden on their feet. He capped off a notable four-point play with a free throw, allowing the Knicks to lead by three at halftime.
On Monday, the Knicks secured a win against the struggling Wizards, ending the game at 119-102. Towns led all scorers with a season-high of 33 points. With this victory, the Knicks improved to 4-3 for the season and maintained a perfect home record at 4-0.
It wasn’t long ago that Towns experienced a rough patch during a game against the Bucks, where he shot just 2-for-12, scoring only eight points—certainly one of his poorer performances with the team.
During that game, it really seemed like he was having trouble fitting into coach Mike Brown’s system, and the Knicks were struggling overall in their initial games.
Yet, Towns bounced back impressively in the back-to-back matchups this weekend, helping the Knicks secure wins in both games, reigniting the season’s momentum.
Against the Bulls, he tallied 20 points on 11 efficient attempts, along with 12 rebounds, five assists, and two blocks.
On Monday, Towns was notably more aggressive, shooting 12 of 24 from the field while contributing 13 rebounds and five assists.
The Knicks weren’t without their challenges. They started slowly, lagging on defense and settling into their offensive rhythm too late in the first quarter. By the end of that quarter, the Wizards had built an eight-point lead, shooting an impressive 72.2 percent from the field. The fatigue from playing back-to-back games seemed apparent. At one point, Washington’s lead even reached 10 points early in the second quarter.
Had they faced a stronger team, the outcome could have been much different, especially given the Knicks’ previous struggles during their losing streak. However, the Wizards, currently at 1-6, seem poised to have a tough year ahead. With a little more effort, the Knicks could have really taken control.
The disparities in talent became glaringly clear in the third quarter when the Knicks outscored the Wizards by 17 points, leading to a dominant win.
Jalen Brunson and Anunoby were pivotal after halftime, both finishing the game with 16 points. Jordan Clarkson continued to make a notable impact off the bench, contributing 15 points for the second consecutive night.
Hart, dealing with injuries to his finger and ankle, appeared to have rediscovered his form, finishing with 10 points, 10 rebounds, and five assists.
Having passed their first back-to-back challenge, Towns seems to be returning to his All-NBA form, and concerns about Brown’s system appear to be fading.
It was a solid way to kick off their homestand.
