A representative for Carmelo Anthony’s family addressed the ongoing racial tensions related to charges against an 18-year-old accused of pursuing Austin Metcalf in Texas. This incident reportedly led to the fatal stabbing of Metcalf in Frisco, Texas.
Following the indictment, Dominique Alexander, the founder and president of the Next Generation Action Network (NGAN), took to X to share that “legal proceedings will move towards trial.” He emphasized that the case involves sensitive information about multiple minors, which he can’t disclose. Therefore, he has chosen not to let the case be tried in the court of public opinion.
In a pointed message to those he claims are “targeting” Anthony, Alexander urged, “To those filled with racism, paranoia, and hate directed at Carmelo and his family, we won’t be intimidated. We’re standing firm.” He described the case as emblematic of the struggles faced by Black individuals in America, highlighting the scrutiny surrounding self-defense claims.
Alexander called on Anthony’s supporters to pray for a fair legal process, encouraging solidarity against what he identifies as white supremacy.
NGAN reiterated their commitment to ensure that Anthony receives a just trial, insisting this case hasn’t been prejudged, but declined to elaborate further.
Anthony’s attorney, Mike Howard, distanced the case from racial issues, stating, “The facts here don’t revolve around race.” He noted that both parties involved are minors, one White and one Black, leading to a public perception that race is a factor. Howard maintained that the law should be applied fairly to everyone.
The charges against Anthony stem from the alleged stabbing of 17-year-old Metcalf during a confrontation at a track event on April 2.
Metcalf’s father, Jeff, expressed skepticism about Alexander’s statements. In a response to a question about Alexander’s post, he said, “I don’t really care what he has to say.” Following the indictment, he felt relieved that progress was being made in the legal proceedings, though he acknowledged it would never bring his son back.
Jeff Metcalf stated his hope for justice, saying, “I fully believe that justice will serve Austin.” He expressed eagerness for the upcoming trials while recognizing the irreplaceable loss of his son.
Alexander has commented on facing racial undercurrents since becoming a spokesperson for the Anthony family. He described a chaotic press conference where Jeff Metcalf made an appearance after Anthony’s bond was lowered from $1 million to $250,000. During this event, Alexander criticized Metcalf, accusing him of being disrespectful.
In defending Anthony, Alexander remarked that he should be afforded the same rights granted to past defendants in high-profile cases. He argued that all individuals should have the right to defend themselves.
An arrest report from the April incident detailed that Metcalf confronted Anthony, reportedly stating, “Let’s touch me and see what happens.” Witnesses indicated that during the ensuing altercation, Anthony allegedly produced a knife and stabbed Metcalf.
One officer labeled Anthony as suspicious, and during the investigation, Anthony provided a voluntary statement.
