New List of Sanctuary Cities Coming Soon
During a recent briefing, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt informed the Daily Caller that the Trump administration is preparing to publish an updated list of sanctuary cities that do not adhere to federal law.
The Department of Homeland Security had previously made a list of “Sanctuary Jurisdictions” unavailable, following some backlash from urban leaders concerned about their inclusion. Nonetheless, Leavitt reassured attendees that the list would be reinstated shortly.
“The Department of Homeland Security will release a precise list of sanctuary cities,” she stated.
Leavitt addressed inquiries regarding potential actions against these jurisdictions in light of recent terrorist attacks in Boulder, Colorado. Notably, just a month prior to the attack, Colorado had enacted protections for undocumented immigrants. I mean, it’s quite a situation, isn’t it?
In response, Leavitt shared that the President has signed an executive order urging the Attorney General to pursue federal charges against state and local officials who do not comply with federal immigration laws. This seems like a pretty significant step.
In an April directive, Trump cautioned that non-compliant jurisdictions could face cuts to federal funding. The order also tasked the Attorney General and the Secretary of Homeland Security with exploring legal avenues to ensure these areas come into compliance.
The executive order asserts that illegal immigrants should not be prioritized over American citizens and mandates the Attorney General to address any state or local regulations that give undue preference to non-citizens.
This directive also called for the DHS to identify localities undermining federal immigration enforcement, providing them a chance to rectify their non-compliance. It raises some questions, doesn’t it? How effectively can these jurisdictions realign their policies to prioritize citizen safety while following federal guidelines?
The upcoming list is expected to spotlight those jurisdictions needing to revise their approaches to better protect American citizens, steering clear of what the administration sees as dangerous illegal immigration.
