Karoline Leavitt Questioned on Trump's Claim that Democrats Committed Crimes 'Worthy of the Death Penalty'

Press Secretary Responds to Trump’s Controversial Comments

On Thursday, White House press secretary Caroline Levitt addressed President Donald Trump’s statement regarding Democrats who allegedly encouraged the military to disobey orders. Trump described this as a crime that should be punishable by death.

In a couple of posts on Truth Social, Trump singled out six Democratic lawmakers for urging military personnel to “ignore illegal orders” and accused them of sedition, which, as he noted, could lead to severe consequences. In response, Levitt didn’t hold back, criticizing these Congress members for allegedly pushing military members to defy the president, thus putting themselves in jeopardy.

Levitt remarked that the integrity of the U.S. military depends on the chain of command. A breakdown of this chain can lead to dire situations, even fatalities. She pointed out that these lawmakers have a responsibility to uphold the law and noted, “The sanctity of our military rests in the chain of command.”

She continued, indicating that if military personnel were to receive such messages, it could cause chaos and potentially incite violence. This certainly raises concerns about the impact on the military and its operational effectiveness.

Democratic Senator Elissa Slotkin from Michigan, along with Senators Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.) and Chris Deluzio (D-Penn.), released a video accusing Trump of violating the Constitution by putting military officials against the American people. Each of these lawmakers has a background in military or intelligence services. Their statement suggested that Trump’s directives have never been illegal, yet they argue that the rhetoric around these orders is dangerous.

Levitt emphasized that obeying lawful orders is vital for military personnel, disputing the insinuation that the president has issued illegal directives. She insisted that commands should flow through the appropriate channels, such as the Secretary of the Army.

The lawmakers concluded with a statement asserting that those who take an oath to defend the Constitution should not be threatened with death, stressing their commitment to supporting service members in their duty to obey legal orders. They emphasized that this issue transcends politics, touching upon the essence of American identity and unity.

In light of these events, it was reiterated that Article 2, Section 2 of the Constitution designates the president as the supreme commander of the armed forces, which includes oversight of intelligence agencies such as the FBI and CIA.

In a separate note, Army Secretary Pete Hegseth reacted to the controversy, suggesting it represented a serious misunderstanding of Trump’s stance.
