MANCHESTER, N.H.
Former White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt believes that President Donald Trump is ready to tackle a tough political landscape as Republicans aim to maintain their slim majorities in both the House and Senate.
“The president is determined and always tends to be optimistic,” Leavitt remarked during a recent interview, adding a note about her home state of New Hampshire.
The Republican Party faces significant challenges, given that historically, the party in power tends to lose seats in midterm elections. There are also external factors at play, such as ongoing inflation that affects grocery prices, high gas prices linked to an unpopular conflict with Iran, and Trump’s own low approval ratings.
Leavitt acknowledged that Trump is well aware of the historical trends affecting Republicans, saying, “He certainly understands that history isn’t really on our side at the moment, but that hasn’t deterred him. He’s been campaigning all over the place this week—from North Carolina to South Carolina and heading to Michigan this weekend.”
Moreover, there’s a concern regarding voter turnout among MAGA supporters who may not be motivated to vote in the midterms if Trump isn’t on the ballot. Leavitt emphasized, “Trump is out there reminding everyone what’s at stake in this election, urging voters to understand why it’s crucial to participate this time around, even if they don’t typically do so during midterms.”
As Election Day approaches, Democrats seem to be gaining momentum. Democratic National Committee Chair Ken Martin pointed out in a recent social media statement, “The Republicans are clearly feeling threatened! They are increasingly pouring more resources into the most solidly Republican areas to hold on to their positions. We have them on the run.”
Leavitt further highlighted the election as a contrast between conservative Republican candidates—focused on tax cuts, border security, and prioritizing American citizens—and what she described as “extreme liberal candidates, among the most radical we’ve encountered in our nation’s history.” She also mentioned that Republicans have a significant fundraising edge over Democrats, which she believes will help communicate the stakes of the election effectively.
