FBI Election-Related Seizures in Georgia Spark Controversy
White House press secretary Caroline Levitt addressed the media’s skepticism over the FBI’s recent actions involving the seizure of ballots and documents tied to the 2020 election in Fulton County, Georgia. This follows extended media discussions about alleged Russian interference in the 2016 election.
The FBI executed search warrants in January within the area that includes Atlanta. Interestingly, they brought in the Director of National Intelligence, Tulsi Gabbard, to assess election security. Her involvement has raised eyebrows, leading to criticism from Democrats and some in the media who viewed it as a strongly politicized move.
Levitt defended Gabbard’s role, stating, “As director of national intelligence, part of Gabbard’s responsibility is ensuring that American elections remain shielded from foreign interference.” She emphasized that the President fully supports Gabbard and Kash Patel in their mission to protect election integrity.
Fulton County’s Movements
Fulton County has filed a motion demanding the return of the materials seized by the FBI regarding the 2020 election.
When pressed by a reporter about potential signs of foreign meddling, Levitt pointed out that the media had frequently claimed Russia interfered in the 2016 elections, which Trump contested against Hillary Clinton. It seemed, perhaps, that she was trying to remind reporters of the broader context.
Continuing Controversies
In a moment of frustration, Levitt asserted, “It’s the media that keeps saying Russia is involved in our elections. This message has been around for ages.” She further noted that given the repetitive claims of foreign influence, journalists should be pleased that the current administration is actively investigating.
Interestingly, Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into supposed collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia concluded in March 2019, finding no evidence to uphold the claims.
