Karoline Leavitt urges the GOP to take action and end the filibuster

Calls for Abolishing the Filibuster Intensify

In a recent interview on “Pod Force One,” White House press secretary Caroline Levitt reiterated demands for Republicans to eliminate the filibuster to help advance President Trump’s agenda.

Levitt emphasized that removing the 60-vote threshold in the Senate could streamline efforts to reform federal voting laws, which the president has focused on.

“The Republican Party really needs to buckle down and take action; that’s what the president expects from them, and, honestly, it’s what the American people want,” she stated.

She pointed out the importance of addressing issues like election integrity, voter ID laws, and the elimination of universal mail-in ballots. “I believe all of this can be achieved if Congress works together to abolish the filibuster,” she continued.

Levitt mentioned that the president has voiced his thoughts on this topic to Senate leadership, regardless of their stance. “We’ll see how that plays out,” she added, leaving a hint of uncertainty.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-South Dakota) has committed to keeping the filibuster intact, citing its role in maintaining a thoughtful legislative process. He described the filibuster as a crucial check against hasty legislation.

He emphasized the original intent behind the Senate’s setup, arguing it should prevent the majority party from acting without consideration. “This is about protecting the rights of the American people,” he said during a recent Senate floor speech.

The issue of the filibuster often leads to bipartisan discussions since neither party has a clear majority in the Senate since the Democrats gained temporary control. Without the filibuster, legislation could pass with just a simple majority, as seen with judicial nominations since 2013.

The inability to reach a compromise recently led to a 43-day government shutdown that began on October 1. Trump has urged Republicans to “go nuclear” and remove the 60-vote barrier for reopening the government.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) defended the filibuster, noting its importance as a safeguard against potential abuses of power by the majority party. He pointed out that if roles were reversed, Republicans would be concerned about the Democrats’ plans regarding issues like Supreme Court changes.

Levitt previously stated that if Democrats regained power, they would likely attempt to strip the Senate of the filibuster altogether. She underscored that a lot could be accomplished if Republicans moved to abolish it and fully utilized Trump’s presidency.

She also remarked that the filibuster “no longer serves its original purpose,” arguing that Trump wants it gone to maximize his effectiveness in office. “He achieved remarkable things during his first term, including significant tax cuts for the middle class in a short timeframe,” she concluded.

Vice President J.D. Vance, who served in the Senate before joining Trump’s team, has also shown support for abolishing the filibuster.
