Kate Gosselin Reflects on Life After Empty Nest Syndrome

Kate Gosselin is opening up about her post-empty nest experience, which has involved, well, some not-so-healthy coping strategies. In a recent TikTok video, the former reality star shared her initial feelings when her twin daughters, Maddy and Cara, who are now 24, headed off to college.

Interestingly, she revealed that her daughter attempted to stay behind by pretending to be asleep downstairs. Gosselin confessed, “I really couldn’t grasp that they were gone and that I wouldn’t see them until the holidays. So, I dealt with it in an unhealthy way. That’s how I coped.” She mentioned how, in the early weeks, her daughter often said she was away at school, and the three of them sat together in tears.

“Then they made friends, and I didn’t hear much from them, which honestly scared me,” she shared. Gosselin expressed her worries about her daughter’s safety and gradually began to ease her grip, eventually finding comfort in advice from a friend who had already sent their child to college.

She explained, “By the time the younger ones head off, they attend schools close to home, which makes it easier. We could get together on weekends. I didn’t feel it as much.” Kate is the mother of six, including Joel, Aeden, Alexis, Leah, and Colin, all now 21 years old.

Reflecting on the years of filming “Kate Plus 8,” she mentioned how she cherishes family holidays when the house is loud and full of life. She emphasized, “In this whole empty nest thing, let’s not forget what we aim for as parents. We want our children to grow into capable and productive members of society. When they go to college, it’s a good sign that they are evolving.”

In a light-hearted moment, she showed her followers the process of sewing buttons on Joel’s suit as he prepares for college.

Recently, Gosselin also acknowledged on TikTok that her life today is quite different from what viewers saw during the peak of her reality show days. Now working as a pediatric nurse, she explained, “Today was hectic. I had a 12-hour shift, and I spent it caring for my patients, which included attending a birthday party and playing outside.”

While many praised her dedication, one fan probed about the income she had generated from the show. Gosselin replied thoughtfully, “Honestly? I take pride in being able to fund college for all eight of my kids. I managed to cover their tuition and legal costs. If it weren’t for those expenses, I could have saved more for my retirement. But, you know, I feel like I’m aiding other families too, and that’s important.”

“Jon & Kate Plus 8” aired from 2007 to 2009, highlighting the challenges and joys of raising eight children. Following their divorce, Gosselin had sole physical custody of all the kids, although it later came to light that Hannah lived with Jon, with little contact among the others.

In 2018, Jon received temporary custody of one of the sextuplets due to behavioral issues and was alleged to have been placed in another school by Kate at the age of 12. More recently, Colin accused Kate of being “physically aggressive and very verbally abusive,” describing a troubling living situation that involved being confined in a room with a small window and a mattress.

After the interview, Kate’s lawyer commented on the situation, suggesting that her words might have been misrepresented and that it was best not to engage further since the truth would prevail in time.
