Kate Gosselin Discusses Christmas Budgeting as a Single Mom of Eight

Kate Gosselin recently opened up about her approach to budgeting for Christmas as a mother to eight children. This system, she revealed, was born from a challenging financial situation she faced in the past.

In a TikTok video, the former star of “John & Kate Plus 8,” who is now 50, shared the structured method she employs during the holiday season. Each November, she asks her kids for a detailed wishlist—this way, they can benefit from holiday sales.

Kate, who has twins Madeline and Cara, 25, as well as sextuplets Arden, Leah, Alexis, Joel, Colin, and Hannah, 21, with ex-husband Jon Gosselin, acknowledged that she sometimes struggles with the logistics. Despite being estranged from Colin and Hannah, she chose not to disclose whether they were part of her holiday budget.

After gathering the kids’ lists complete with links, sizes, and prices, she compiles everything into a note on her phone. Then, she sets a target budget, trying to manage it fairly among her children. However, she admitted that plans can go awry—often, her daughter Leah ends up asking for more, which forces Kate to adjust the budgets for everyone else.

“It’s essential to be fair down to the last cent,” she said.

Continuing a family tradition, Kate ensures each child receives a decorated box with cash. She shared that this practice was inspired by her own mother, emphasizing how crucial fairness is to her. Interestingly, some kids end up asking for less, which occasionally leads Kate to spend more on others. “If they don’t ask for much, some might get $150 in their box,” she mentioned.

Though the boxes may not always look the same, she tries to balance the gifts as best as she can. Additionally, she purchases one larger gift to be shared among all the siblings.

Reflecting on the holidays as her children age and their tastes evolve, Kate noted that Christmas morning feels shorter than it used to. To extend the thrill, she wraps even smaller items like toiletries in her children’s stockings, cleverly prolonging the anticipation.

Kate, who has transitioned to a pediatric nurse after her reality TV career diminished, is determined to ensure fairness in her budgeting. Her focus remains on providing a special Christmas for her children despite the ups and downs of her financial journey.

In a recent conversation, she recalled how the income from her reality show largely went towards legal fees and supporting her family. When questioned about that money, she candidly explained, “It went towards a college fund, and I feel proud to support eight kids.” She also revealed that the legal battles cost her significantly, but expressed a sense of fulfillment in helping others.

Kate first gained fame on TLC’s “Jon & Kate Plus 8,” which depicted her life with Jon and their children. The show aired from 2007 until their divorce in 2009, leading her to star in the follow-up series, “Kate Plus 8,” which showcases her life as a single parent.
