Kathleen Kennedy’s Departure from Lucasfilm

Reports suggest that Disney might soon announce Kathleen Kennedy’s resignation as president of Lucasfilm, possibly within the next week or two. It’s been hinted for a while now that Dave Filoni, who currently serves as Lucasfilm’s chief creative officer, will step into a more prominent role overseeing the Star Wars franchises.

While Filoni is being characterized as a non-traditional executive, he’ll reportedly be working closely with Lynwen Brennan. Still, he is set to steer the creative direction for various Star Wars projects across multiple platforms.

However, there’s some skepticism here. Filoni bears a striking resemblance to Kennedy in many ways. He’s known for his work on the Disney+ series Ahsoka and has also produced other successful shows like The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett.

Compounding this concern, Filoni has reportedly mentored Lesley Headland, who is behind the critically panned Disney+ series The Acolyte.

In her own words, Headland described Filoni as a key figure in guiding her vision, emphasizing that he helped her understand the complexities of the timeline for both Jedi and other character arcs. She even credited him with the inspiration for a key element in her series, noting a moment of realization he provided about character archetypes.

The real test for the Star Wars franchise will arrive with the release of its first feature film in seven years, set for May. It’s expected to involve characters from The Mandalorian & Grogu.

I have to admit, it wouldn’t surprise me if the series struggles to connect with its loyal fan base. There’s a growing sense of indifference out there, similar to what we’ve observed in other franchises. When creators prioritize personal agendas over storytelling, only disappointment follows; that feeling of frustration can turn into a troubling apathy towards a brand.

Kennedy has led Lucasfilm since 2012 and has stated she has no immediate plans to step aside, meaning she may still play a role in the Star Wars universe.

But I can’t help but wonder, does anyone really care anymore?
