“Diss me, Cait!”
During a recent event, Governor Kathy Hochul expressed her frustration regarding claims that she could be a liability for fellow Democrats in the upcoming election. This came after a congressional candidate was filmed agreeing with her Republican opponent that Hochul should be replaced.
When reporters inquired about comments made by Democrat Cait Conley during a debate with GOP Representative Mike Lawler, Hochul stated, “I really don’t lose a lot of sleep over other people’s debates.”
“I don’t really care about how Mike Lawler characterizes something,” she added vehemently, while attending an unrelated gathering in Manhattan.
She suggested that Conley had “clarified” her remarks made in the video.
In a strange turn of events, Conley’s campaign issued a statement claiming Lawler was “lying in a desperate attempt to save face,” but did not elaborate on the specifics.
The video, recorded at a VFW forum in Putnam County on October 13, captured Lawler asserting, “We need a new governor. Kathy Hochul has to go.” Following this, Conley expressed her “absolute agreement” with Lawler and criticized New York’s business environment.
Despite trying to brush off the public slight, Hochul did not challenge the perspective that she could be a drag on Democratic candidates, a concern that has lingered since Republicans gained significant ground during her last electoral campaign in 2022 against former Rep. Lee Zeldin.
In that election, the GOP managed to secure three seats in New York, contributing to their control of the House of Representatives, an outcome that led to criticism of Hochul from senior Democratic figures, including Nancy Pelosi.
“I want my candidates to win, and that’s all I’m going to say about it, I want my candidates to win,” Hochul concluded on Friday.
