Katie Ledecky wins gold in women’s 1,500-meter freestyle, tying record with 8th Olympic victory

Katie Ledecky is an eight-time Olympic gold medalist.

The 27-year-old won the 1,500 meters on Wednesday, tying her with Jenny Thompson for the most Olympic gold medals in women’s swimming history, setting an Olympic record of 15 minutes 30.02 seconds in her dominant victory.

It was her 12th medal overall, tying her with Thompson and Emma McKeown for the most medals in women’s Olympic swimming history.

Ledecky jumped out to a strong lead early on, leading by more than three seconds after the quarter mark, and by the 1,200m mark her lead had grown to nearly eight seconds, ultimately going on to win by double digits.

She also won the competition in Tokyo.

The lead was so long that the camera had to zoom out to get a shot of the next fastest swimmer.

Before Wednesday, she had won one medal at the meet, a bronze in the women’s 400-meter freestyle.

Ledecky will be aiming for gold again in the 800m freestyle, with the final taking place on Saturday afternoon.
