Australia’s Gun Control Response After Tragedy

On Monday, MS NOW host Katie Toole expressed admiration for Australia’s swift action following a recent terrorist attack that targeted a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach. The attack, involving at least two gunmen, led to the deaths of 15 individuals and left 40 others injured, including a child and two police officers.

Toole drew parallels to another violent incident, the double murder at Brown University in Rhode Island. He launched into a discussion on mass shootings, particularly in schools, referencing Australia’s stringent gun laws enacted after the 1996 shooting in Port Arthur, which claimed 35 lives.

“They’re taking steps in Australia,” Toole stated. “Prime Minister Anthony Albanese pledged reforms within hours of the attack, demonstrating a commitment to addressing gun violence after such a horrific event aimed at a Jewish community celebrating Hanukkah.”

Following the Bondi Beach incident, Albanese announced intentions to impose further restrictions on gun ownership. The proposed measures focus on limiting the number of firearms a single person can possess, enhancing the examination of firearm permits, allowing only Australian citizens to own guns, and utilizing criminal history to assess the eligibility for firearm licenses.

Toole questioned the lack of action in the U.S., wondering aloud why similar discussions weren’t occurring domestically. “Politicians seem to be realizing that we need to reconsider our strict gun laws enacted post-1996, so why isn’t there more conversation about it?” he said.

On a related note, the manhunt for the suspect in the Brown University double murder has entered its third day, with the FBI having previously detained and then released one individual of interest. Toole expressed frustration over the status quo amid ongoing school shootings.

“If we keep on this path, the chances of more incidents like this are increasing. Over time, more people are facing these traumatic experiences,” Toole argued. He referred to statistics indicating that around 400,000 children have encountered gun violence since the Columbine High School shooting in 1999, which had seemed like an unimaginable event at the time.

“But here we are again, facing worse tragedies: Sandy Hook in Connecticut, Marjory Stoneman Douglas in Florida, Robb Elementary School in Texas, and Covenant in Nashville,” Toole continued.

Many Democratic leaders point to the comprehensive gun bans implemented in Australia after the Port Arthur massacre as a successful model for preventing mass shootings, particularly concerning the regulation of so-called “assault weapons.”
