On Thursday’s broadcast of FOX News Channel’s “America’s Newsroom,” NYPD Deputy Director of Intelligence Rebecca Weiner said that because New York City is designated a sanctuary city, the city has no control over assaults on NYPD officers. He responded to a question about whether he would contact Immigration and Customs Enforcement to remove suspected immigrants. He said keeping immigrants in jails (which they currently don’t) is “a good solution to the problem.”
co-host Dana Perino asked. [relevant exchange begins around 2:25] “[S]Oh, you said you have a good relationship with the federal government. But if something like this happened in Times Square, they would be sent to jail. But what happens if you call ICE? [Immigration] and customs enforcement agencies and [say], I want you to arrest these people and run them out of town. Could something like that happen here in the sanctuary city of New York? ”
Weiner replied, “Well, if they’re in prison, that’s a good solution to the problem.”
Then Perino interjected and said, However, they are out on bail and are being released without bail. ”
Mr. Weiner replied: People who commit crimes in this city cannot be released on bail, absolutely not. From our perspective, we need to do everything we can to make sure we stop people before serious incidents like this occur. ”
