Ukraine to Receive More Patriot Air Defense Missiles

Ukraine will be getting additional Patriot air defense missiles from the United States, but interestingly, American taxpayers won’t foot the bill; that responsibility lies with European taxpayers, according to President Donald Trump.

Retired General Keith Kellogg, who is a special advisor to President Trump, arrived in Kiev early Monday morning via train to meet with Ukrainian officials. Ahead of his arrival, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky mentioned organizing a meeting for General Kellogg with the head of Ukraine’s security services.

During the meeting, President Zelensky expressed hopes for “complete” information sharing with General Kellogg, indicating he wants to spearhead discussions on how Ukraine can effectively counteract Russia.

The Ukrainian President’s Office welcomed General Kellogg to Kiev, stating that their discussions would center on various issues including defense, security, arms, sanctions, protecting citizens, and enhancing cooperation between Ukraine and the US.

This visit came shortly after President Trump voiced his dissatisfaction regarding the possibility of peace negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Amid these tensions, the US’s decision to send more Patriot missiles was reiterated.

In remarks made upon his return to Washington, D.C., Trump stated, “We’re not paying anything for it. But we’ll send it; it’ll become business for us, we’ll send the patriots they desperately need.”

In recent weeks, Russia has conducted nightly attacks on Ukraine, leading to concerns as missile and drone counts reached staggering numbers, sometimes exceeding 500 in a single night. These increasing attacks are believed to showcase Russia’s growing industrial capabilities for military production.

Turning to Putin, Trump noted, “Putin really surprised a lot of people. He told me a good story, then bombed everyone in the evening, and there’s a bit of a problem there.”

The potential supply of more Patriot missiles—each costing over $3 million—is a critical topic. The production, limited to the US, is reportedly only at a pace of about two missiles per day. The missiles already dispatched to Ukraine and those pledged by Trump, funded by the European Union, will likely come from U.S. reserves and new production efforts. Complications surrounding ongoing tensions with China over issues like Iran and Taiwan are adding another layer of concern for managing missile supplies.

Reports suggest that US stockpiles of Patriot missiles globally could be around 25% of what is deemed necessary to fulfill mission requirements, but specific figures have not been disclosed.
