Kelly Clarkson’s Dispute with Brooklyn Shop Raises Concerns for Owner

Kelly Clarkson’s recent altercation with a shop in Brooklyn has left the owner more worried than just about a lost sale. Adam Rubin, co-owner of Art of Play and a children’s author, spoke about the incident inside the store, expressing fears that Clarkson’s actions have put his business at risk.

The controversy began over a $15,000 mechanical singing bird, which has now been humorously repriced at $15 million. “I’m genuinely afraid for the shop’s safety. Kelly Clarkson has put us in danger,” Rubin said, shedding light on the issues he and his business have faced since their dispute went viral.

According to Rubin, the fallout has included more than just negative comments online; threats and doxxing have affected both him and his staff. “We’ve received overwhelming support from our neighbors, but they too have faced attacks and threats,” he mentioned.

Rubin accused Clarkson of misusing her celebrity status, suggesting that her influence has fueled the backlash against his small business unfairly. “You can’t just try to squash someone like a bug and think no one will notice,” he stated, feeling frustrated that people who have never set foot in his shop would pile on.

The bird, now priced at a staggering amount, has garnered a lot of attention. A new sign at Art of Play labels it as a creation of artist Bliss Kolb, though Rubin has clarified the bird is part of the store’s permanent collection and not for sale.

Reflecting on the bizarre situation, Rubin pointed out that the price change was a reaction to the newfound publicity surrounding Molly, the bird. “It’s all about supply and demand,” he noted, acknowledging that the increased visibility has made her one of the most famous mechanical birds around.

This dust-up started when Clarkson accused the shop of treating her poorly, likening her experience to Julia Roberts’ character in “Pretty Woman.” She expressed disappointment after a visit to the store, stating that she felt dismissed and unvalued. Rubin defended his staff’s actions, claiming it was a miscommunication and that they were merely trying to suggest a similar product.

The incident has escalated to a reminder of how celebrity statements can dramatically amplify issues. Rubin revealed that he had health concerns too, having recently undergone a procedure, yet felt compelled to address the safety of his store.

At its heart, Art of Play is meant to inspire wonder and curiosity, Rubin explained, with items designed to make people feel young again. He also mentioned that despite the ongoing dispute, Clarkson would still be welcome back to the shop. “We reached out to her, but who knows if she’ll respond,” he concluded, capturing a sense of lingering hope amidst the chaos.

The shop, which features various quirky items, also hosts magic performances, with Molly playing a prominent role. Rubin’s ongoing commitment to his business and community remains evident, even amidst the controversy.
