Comedian Kelsey Cook provided her thoughts on why more and more people are flocking to the podcast for their information, and why they have contributed to the rise of the meteors of stand-up comedy in recent years.

Cook has been a stand-up comedian for over 15 years, and her recent special, “Mark Your Territory,” premiered on Hulu and YouTube on February 11th.

The main reason she believes that people are turning to podcasts through mainstream media is summarised in the lack of trust and connection between mainstream media and the public.

“I think people are starting to get more political information from podcasts because people want to feel more reliable about the interviewer. “Cook said, “Especially when it comes to comedians.” , this is someone like us.”

She also said people have time related to comedians and podcasters. Comedians and podcasters usually present themselves as everyday people than politicians and news anchors.

“this [podcaster] Not another politician or a news anchor that isn't necessarily so relevant. And I think that's why people are more trusting their hosts, they feel like it's like a very different interview environment and are more suited to podcasts,” the comedian says. I did. It's a little more relaxed about it. It feels more like a real interview than a major news source. ”

The 2024 election cycle brought this idea of public trusted podcasters into the spotlight in legacy media, with President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance largely allocated to the campaign trail, and the Joe Logan Experience and Joe Appears on popular podcasts such as Logan Experience. Tim Dillon Shaw.

The strategy paid off, and Trump won the popularity vote in 2024, continuing to see his approval rating of his personal all-time since the election.

Cook also mentioned that comedy will become a more free medium than ever before. Comics have the ability to say whatever they like. As Cook explained, there is no more gatekeeper who can mediate what the comic can convey to the audience.

“I think comedy will become a more free medium. I think people have more to find their fan base than ever before. It doesn't necessarily have to be. Tea,” Cook insisted. “I think it's getting very free where people can do what they want, they can say what they want and their fans can find them.”

When it comes to stand-up comedy, Cook feels that the biggest reason for the recent surge in popularity is the Covid-19 pandemic, and as a result, people are paying more attention to social media and streaming services than ever before.

“I think it was probably the pandemic that would help comedy explode the most. Everyone was watching TV on their phones and watching their phones, Cook said.

According to Cook, the end of the pandemic was the beginning of the stand-up touring boom. Many people who found their favorite comedians through social media and streaming services during lockdown have finally been able to see their favorite acts firsthand.

“I think I saw someone who found a new favorite cartoon during the pandemic, and if things got back and people could start to tour again, people would say, “Great, this guy came to my town.” , I've been cooperated in, no matter how long I want to go out and do something.” And many of us, especially so that people can go out and resume normal life again. I think we've seen a huge tour boom. ”

According to Pollstar Revenue from stand-up shows doubled between 2022 and 2024, with the top 25 comedians earning a total of $582.7 million over the past year.
