Perkins Critiques Cavaliers’ Performance in Eastern Conference Finals
Kendrick Perkins found the lack of competitiveness in the Eastern Conference Finals shocking.
The ESPN analyst did not hold back in criticizing the Cleveland Cavaliers after they faced a double-digit loss to the Knicks in a four-game sweep.
On “First Take,” Perkins remarked, “They were flat-out and embarrassed. It was disconcerting for the league to see that. There was no competition between the lines at this stage.”
He went further, suggesting that heads should roll within the organization, despite the Cavaliers reaching the playoffs for the fourth consecutive year and making the conference finals for the first time since 2018.
“If I were Dan Gilbert, I would look at every single person on that roster, every single person on that coaching staff, and say every single one of them is on the chopping block. Every single one of them,” Perkins added. “I’m not giving Donovan Mitchell a pass. That score was cute, but it wasn’t powerful.”
Perkins wasn’t alone in his dissatisfaction. Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert expressed his frustration on social media, stating that the team’s effort was “nowhere near where it needed to be.”
The sweep, including a disastrous Game 1, led to calls from some fans for coach Kenny Atkinson’s dismissal, but the Cavaliers have decided to keep him, as reported.
Looking ahead, the Cavaliers have crucial decisions to make about their core players, who are currently among the highest-paid in the NBA. James Harden, a significant acquisition at the trade deadline, is entering free agency after earning $39.4 million this season at age 36.
Meanwhile, star guard Donovan Mitchell, who tied for a team-high salary of $46.4 million with Evan Mobley, is eligible for a contract extension. Both players seem interested in continuing their journey in Cleveland, but ultimately, it will be up to general manager Mike Gansey to shape the roster to make a run at the NBA Finals again.
Still, it’s going to take a while for the Cavaliers to shake off the disappointment of this recent series.
