Launch of the Make America Healthy Again Institute
Supporters of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. came together on Thursday to announce the formation of the Make America Healthy Again Institute, a new initiative aimed at reforming the oversight functions of the Health and Human Services Department.
Mark Gorton, a co-founder of the MAHA Institute, expressed that the existing bureaucratic systems prefer maintaining the status quo. “Bobby Kennedy and the dedicated individuals behind this initiative represent a grassroots movement of caring people who have been engaged in this cause for years,” he noted.
Gorton elaborated on the mission of the MAHA Institute, stating, “Our goal is to harness this collective energy and strategically connect these individuals with government officials.”
Together with Tony Lyons, Gorton previously led the American Values PAC in support of Kennedy’s presidential campaign, rebranding its 501(c)(4) as the MAHA Institute.
He pointed out the challenge of having limited true MAHA supporters in federal health roles, estimating only around 75 within a Health and Human Services Department that employs 60,000 people. “These individuals face an enormous task because the bureaucratic environment is resistant to change,” Gorton explained.
The MAHA Institute aims to fill a gap in Washington, representing public interests and promoting the health of citizens.
Calley Means, an advisor to the White House on health matters, shared that this new institute aims to bridge the MAHA and MAGA movements, emphasizing that while MAGA may attract more men, the MAHA movement includes equal participation from all genders. His sister has been nominated by Donald Trump to become the U.S. surgeon general.
“It’s uplifting to see how committed government officials are to this important mission of addressing root health issues,” Means commented.
The conference attendees illustrated his point, with a noticeable representation of women participating.
Means criticized the Democratic stance on children’s health, accusing figures like Sen. Bernie Sanders and Sen. Elizabeth Warren of aligning with Big Pharma against the interests of vulnerable children.
However, he believes that under Trump’s leadership and with Kennedy’s involvement, the MAHA movement can seize a unique opportunity to tackle the challenges surrounding children’s health. According to Means, the solution isn’t about increasing funding or bureaucracies but about addressing the fundamental causes of health issues like chronic illness and obesity.
“It’s not solely thanks to new technologies, but also due to the forward-thinking vision of this administration,” he asserted. “I extend my gratitude to the president, Secretary Kennedy, and Administrator [Mehmet] Oz for their direction. I also appreciate the countless MAHA members striving for a healthier future for us all, including future generations.”
Former Democrat and Kennedy’s speechwriter, Charles Eisenstein, noted the potential of the MAHA movement to unite different political factions around health matters. “The Democratic Party has strayed from its original purpose of defending the marginalized against systemic power and fraud,” Eisenstein stated. “If the media and the Democratic Party recognize this, we might unite various grassroots movements.”
