Couple Injured in Kentucky Tornado
A powerful tornado in Kentucky reached wind speeds of 170 mph, leaving a married couple clinging to each other as they faced the storm. Paul and Gale Klein sought refuge in their home in London, Kentucky, during the severe weather on Friday, which devastated the area.
As the tornado descended upon Laurel County, Paul and Gale held hands for reassurance. However, the storm violently tore their home apart, separating the couple, who are both in their 60s. According to their niece Brandi Bowman, “The doctor said they lost the other arm because they were hugging each other.”
After the storm passed, neighbors responded to the sound of Gale’s cries for help from under the rubble. She reportedly exclaimed, “I need help, I can see my arms in the hallway,” indicating the severity of her injuries.
Rescue teams rushed to the scene, discovering both Paul and Gale trapped beneath debris. They sustained serious injuries and were quickly transported to a nearby hospital. Reports indicate that Gale is in a medically induced coma with punctured lungs, while Paul is recovering but remains hospitalized.
In a small silver lining amid the tragedy, the couple’s dog, Sadie, managed to escape during the chaos. This 12-year-old dog was found waiting in what was left of the home, hoping her owners would return.
Paul, who struggles with dementia, has been comforted by Sadie’s presence in the hospital. Their niece, Taylor Baker, expressed the family’s plight on a GoFundMe page, noting that everything the couple built together has been lost. “They are two of the best people you can ever find,” she wrote, highlighting the additional challenges they face, including another family member battling stage 4 cancer.
Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear declared a state of emergency prior to the storm, which has now left many wondering about the rebuilding process ahead.
