Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear Calls for Mitch McConnell to Reveal His Health Status Publicly

Beshear Calls for Transparency on McConnell’s Health

Kentucky’s Democratic Governor, Andy Beshear, urged Republican Senator Mitch McConnell to publicly share updates about his health on Wednesday.

McConnell, who has been hospitalized for about three weeks, has not provided any recent information regarding his condition. In a letter to McConnell, Beshear emphasized the need for transparency, stating, “In recent weeks, Kentuckians have become increasingly concerned about your health and ability to serve in the Senate.” He added, “As public servants, we have a duty to represent our constituents transparently and communicate our ability to serve clearly.”

If McConnell were to resign, Beshear would have a month to call a special election for voters to choose a replacement. Republican Representative Andy Barr, who won the Kentucky Senate Republican primary in May, is anticipated to take McConnell’s seat in November.

On Tuesday, McConnell’s office informed the Daily Caller News Foundation that he is “improving” and engaging with staff on Senate matters, though they did not provide further details about his health. A spokesperson expressed gratitude for the support McConnell has received during his recovery period.

Senate Majority Leaders John Thune and John Barrasso, along with CNN’s Scott Jennings, mentioned they had a 20-minute conversation with McConnell covering various topics like national security. Their aligned statements were shared by his office, hinting at a coordinated communication strategy.

Utah Senator Mike Lee remarked that he had no information regarding McConnell’s health, suggesting a general lack of awareness among other senators as well.

McConnell was hospitalized on June 14 after being found unconscious at his Washington home, where paramedics administered CPR for a cardiac arrest. He had flu-like symptoms and was in the ICU for about a week in February. Staff have been regularly seen assisting him in navigating the Capitol.

Additionally, McConnell has experienced several falls and instances of freezing up publicly in July 2023.

His wife, Elaine Chao, indicated during a trip to China that his hospitalization didn’t guarantee a swift return, while their youngest daughter has disabled her social media account amid the ongoing concerns about his health.
