Henderson, Kentucky (Weht– Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear has sounded the alarm on tariffs being considered by the Trump administration, indicating they could result in significant costs for American households.
In a statement shared on social media, Beshear indicated that tariffs could impose an additional $4,700 annually on the average family.
“It’s equivalent to several months’ worth of groceries. It’s comparable to multiple months’ rent payments. It could also cover your annual deductible if you’re under private health insurance,” he noted. “No family members can avoid the severe impact. For those struggling to balance their finances each month, it’s enough to push them over the edge.”
The $4,700 figure comes from a recent Yale University Budget Lab Assessment. Experts have concluded that if Trump’s plan to impose an additional 10% tax on nearly all imports is enacted, “the average cost burden per household would be $4,700.”
A different analysis by the Peterson Institute for International Economics predicts a financial burden of around $1,700 for middle-class families. Both studies agree that low-income families would be the most severely affected.
Consumers in need of essential purchases like new vehicles and smartphones may face significant price increases.
According to Bank of America, new tariffs could elevate the average price of cars by around $4,500, even if car manufacturers absorb some of the tariff effects. As a result, the average cost of a new vehicle has soared to an alarming $48,000 after substantial price surges in recent years.
If tariffs persist, Apple is anticipated to hike prices on iPhones and other popular devices due to its heavily reliant supply chain in China. Projections suggest the iPhone 16 Pro Max could see a price increase of up to 29%, raising the base price from $1,200 to $1,550, according to estimates from UBS’s leading investment firm.
Basic necessities like food and clothing are also expected to rise in cost.
Economists are concerned that a trade war may drastically hinder global commerce and potentially lead to a recession, resulting in additional economic repercussions.
While the harsh tariffs were set to take effect, they were put on a 90-day deferment last week. Other tariffs on goods from China remain unchanged.
President Donald Trump’s administration intends for these tariffs to incentivize jobs to return to the US. Management often recognizes the likelihood of price increases due to tariffs.
In a recent address to the New York Economic Club, the Treasury Department stated, “Access to affordable goods is not the core of the American dream.”
