Tragic Accident at St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Louisville
A woman lost her life during a St. Patrick’s Day parade in Louisville, Kentucky, over the weekend, in front of a shocked crowd. The incident took place at the city’s 53rd Annual Parade on Saturday, March 14, just before 4 p.m. Emergency services were summoned to the scene near Bardstown Road and Grinstead Drive following reports of a vehicle striking a woman.
According to preliminary investigations, 50-year-old Joanne Panuti was walking beside a float when she became trapped. It appears her foot got caught, causing her to fall and end up beneath a vehicle.
The float came to a halt shortly after, and bystanders provided first aid before Panuti was transported to a local hospital, where she unfortunately died from her injuries.
Witnesses captured the moment on video, showing Panuti, who was being towed by a silver truck decorated with a four-leaf clover, as she was pulled under the float. Good Samaritans rushed to help her as they awaited emergency responders.
One food vendor, David Gunamba, shared his experience, saying, “I saw the paramedics tending to someone… I saw someone on a stretcher, but I didn’t think it was that serious.” He expressed his heartbreak, noting, “It’s really heartbreaking because it’s someone who lost their life. This is not the news we want to hear as humans, as vendors, as people, as partygoers.”
The organizers of the parade, the Hibernian Cultural and Charitable Society, released a statement reflecting their sorrow over the incident.
Additionally, Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg has called for prayers for the victim’s family and friends. He expressed, “I am deeply saddened to learn of the tragic accident that claimed the life of a woman during today’s St. Patrick’s Day parade. Please join Rachel and I in keeping her family and friends in your prayers. May her memory be a blessing.”
The Louisville Metro Police Department has not yet responded to requests for further comments concerning the situation.
