KeShawn Murphy leaves Auburn's team unexpectedly ahead of the NIT

Auburn’s Keshawn Murphy Opts Out of NIT Play

Auburn received a definitive “no” from forward Keshawn Murphy regarding participation in the NIT tournament.

The senior forward unexpectedly missed the Tigers’ NIT opener on Tuesday night, prompting head coach Stephen Pearl to suggest that Murphy’s time with the team had come to an end.

“Murph has chosen not to participate in these games, and honestly, I’m not sure why. But we have a lot of respect for him and appreciate everything he’s contributed to the program. We wish him nothing but the best,” Pearl said after Auburn secured a 78-67 quarterfinal victory over South Alabama.

“I still encourage him to complete his studies, and my feelings for Murph remain strong. He came here wanting to make history with Auburn, but in the end, he chose not to play. He’s focused on supporting those who are here and eager to compete.”

It’s not uncommon for players to sit out postseason games that aren’t part of the NCAA Tournament, though doing so without prior notice is somewhat rare.

Murphy had played 27 minutes in Auburn’s previous matchup, a 72-62 defeat to Tennessee in the SEC tournament, which ultimately dashed the Tigers’ hopes.

Former coach Bruce Pearl tried to advocate for his son’s team, yet the selection committee excluded SEC teams from the final roster.

Auburn accepted the NIT invitation, but Murphy’s withdrawal caught everyone off guard.

He missed practice on Monday without informing the coaching staff about his decision to skip the tournament, which appears to be a unique situation within the team.

“As of now, my staff and I haven’t received any calls indicating we wouldn’t be playing,” Pearl noted on Monday. “We arrived after the selection show, and it was clear everyone was disappointed. I told the guys to stay in bed, and I’d be back shortly.”

Murphy had a solid season, averaging 10.7 points and 6.8 rebounds per game in his first year after transferring from Mississippi State. He was a starter in 29 of the 31 games, even recording a high of 25 points in a thrilling 75-74 victory over Kentucky on February 21.

Auburn (18-16) is set to face Seattle in the NIT’s second round on either March 21 or 22.
