Ketel Marte's behavior after the burglary is bothering his Diamondbacks teammates

Marte’s Recent Behavior Raises Eyebrows Among Diamondbacks

Ketel Marte seems to be stirring up some irritation among his teammates, although his manager stepped in to defend him against the more severe criticisms coming from within the organization.

A report from the Republic of Arizona indicates that some Diamondbacks players and other staff members have been “quietly complaining” about Marte, particularly mentioning his tendency to request days off. This seemed to come to a head before the All-Star break when Marte, 31, notably asked for a break ahead of Arizona’s final game.

Interestingly, the report also mentioned a moment when Marte’s actions during the All-Star Game “raised eyebrows,” especially after he celebrated a double against Atlanta shortly before this incident.

Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo claimed he wasn’t fully aware of the timing of Marte’s days off but felt there was no pressing need to address the situation within the clubhouse, as he mentioned on Arizona Sports 98.7 FM.

Lovullo had some positive words for Marte, stating, “You’ll say Ketel Marte has a big heart. He’s very emotional. He loves to play and wants to be at the center of everything with his teammates every single day.”

After playing in the All-Star Game, Marte faced a personal crisis when his home in the Dominican Republic was robbed, with items valued at around $400,000 taken. It’s worth noting that even after this disturbance, he opted to take additional time away from the team after the All-Star break.

Some people within the organization suspect that his abrupt departure post-All-Star break is contributing to the struggles facing the Diamondbacks, who are currently sitting at 60-62—a stark contrast from their strong performances over the past couple of seasons, during which they even reached the World Series in 2023.

The franchise has also made several trades, letting go of notable players such as Josh Naylor and Eugenio Suarez, which has added to the current challenges.

Given the circumstances, there’s some speculation among the sources in the Republic of Arizona about whether they should trade Marte, especially considering his significant six-year, $116.5 million contract extension from earlier this year.

Marte has been recognized as one of the top second basemen in baseball, with accolades that include being named to three All-Star teams and finishing in the top five for the National League MVP twice. This season, his numbers—hitting .296/.398/.557 with 23 home runs—support his reputation as an outstanding player. But it begs the question: is his production worth the growing concerns from those around him?

As one source put it, “He’s a great player when he truly wants to be.” There seems to be a lingering uncertainty about the balance between talent and team dynamics.
