Kevin Costner Reflects on a Special Christmas Surprise

Kevin Costner has shared insights about one of his memorable purchases since hitting it big in Hollywood. In a conversation about his upcoming special, “Kevin Costner Presents: The First Christmas,” the acclaimed actor recounted the touching experience of gifting his father a truck for Christmas.

Costner, now 70, described how he surprised his father. “I bought a truck for my dad without revealing what it was,” he explained. “I gave him some hints that led him on a little treasure hunt. At one point, he wondered why he was bringing all these things and where they were supposed to go.” His family watched the whole thing unfold until the clue led his father to the garage, where the surprise awaited.

When his father opened the final clue, he realized the gift was a Silverado truck. “It was quite emotional,” Costner recalled, as his father processed the music linked to the truck. Overwhelmed, he shed tears, and so did Costner. “He’d come from tough times—watching his family lose everything in Oklahoma—and then here was this wonderful moment,” Costner added.

Looking back, Costner reminisced about how, as a child, he eagerly awaited Christmas. Nowadays, he feels that same excitement for his own kids. He mentioned the broader context of the holiday season, recognizing that many face hardships, and emphasized the importance of kindness during this time.

“Live with humility and kindness,” he said. “We should take a moment to check on those we love, especially during festive times.” In his special, Costner aims to delve into the true significance of Christmas, exploring the Nativity story in a way that resonates on a deeper emotional level.

He mentioned how the aim of the special is to look beyond the typical holiday trinkets and understand the essence of the story. “There’s a tradition, sure, but where did it come from? We should explore the stories of young mothers and fathers, and the challenges they faced.” Costner’s personal connection to faith influenced his decision to create this special, as he feels it’s important to share stories that matter.

Reflecting on his first acting gig at the age of four in a Nativity play, Costner chuckled about how his costume didn’t quite fit and how nervous he was, forgetting his lines. “I threw myself into it as best I could,” he said, recalling the bemused expressions of his parents in the audience.

Costner is aware that his shift towards faith-based content might raise eyebrows, but he sees it as an opportunity to invite everyone into understanding a narrative that has persisted through the ages. “Religion can be contentious, but the aim is to share a story that speaks to many,” he noted.

“Kevin Costner Presents: The First Christmas” is set to air on December 9, providing viewers the chance to connect with the core messages of the holiday season. Costner hopes that this special will not only entertain but also enlighten those who tune in.
