Key insights and evaluation from the Giants' Week 12 defeat against the Lions

DETROIT — Reviewing the Giants’ 34-27 Overtime Loss on Sunday:

1. It’s clear that interim coach Mike Kafka has managed to spark some excitement and competitiveness within the team. But does that really position him as a serious candidate for the permanent role? Currently, he’s 0-2, having lost to the Packers and Lions—both playoff aspirants from the NFC North. It’s worth noting that his team wasn’t at their strongest in either game. Kafka devised an offense that racked up 20 points last week and 27 this week, facing off against quarterback Jameis Winston, who has mostly been riding the bench this season. It’ll be interesting to see if his approach changes, especially with quarterback Jackson Dart involved. Right now, Kafka’s time as interim coach feels like it’s just about holding on until the Giants figure something out.

2. The road losing streak has now hit 12 games, marking a franchise record, with the Giants sitting at 0-7 when away from home this season. Back in 2007, they earned a reputation as the Road Warriors thanks to their playoff wins over teams like Tampa, Dallas, and Green Bay on their way to the Super Bowl. This year’s squad, however, might as well be called the Lord Scandalers. Oddly, this group seems to lose their edge on the road. They often have the lead in the fourth quarter but struggle to maintain it. The atmosphere in Ford Field was intense, yet the offense managed to avoid any pre-snap penalties, which is quite the accomplishment considering their past performances.

3. Gunner Olszewski can be a bit of a tricky player. He’s a decent kick returner with limited opportunities and shows some unique skills when he gets the chance to contribute offensively. He demonstrated impressive awareness during a trick play—a throwback pass that ended with him connecting on a 33-yard touchdown throw to quarterback Jameis Winston. The Lions weren’t completely fooled; Olszewski had to step into the pocket and evaluate his options before delivering a well-placed pass that allowed Winston to make a back-shoulder catch against linebacker Derrick Barnes. Olszewski is certainly an intriguing addition to the roster.
