The competition to replace Kentucky Republican Sen. Mitch McConnell is heating up, and a recent poll shows one candidate taking a significant lead. Former Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron is currently ahead in the Republican U.S. Senate primary, garnering 40% of support from those polled, with Rep. Andy Barr and businessman Nate Morris trailing behind.
The survey was commissioned by a super PAC called Kentucky First Action, which is affiliated with Cameron. It involved text-to-web interviews with 600 likely Republican voters in Kentucky, conducted from January 5th to 8th, and has a margin of error of about 4 percentage points.
Aaron Whitehead, an adviser to Kentucky First Action, emphasized Cameron’s strong position, questioning what other candidates have achieved in a race where they’ve reportedly spent nearly $10 million. But Barr’s campaign communications director, Alex Bellizzi, suggested that the poll indicates Barr is gaining traction. He pointed out that Cameron has reportedly dropped 10 points recently and is struggling financially, while Barr enjoys significant grassroots support and a much larger campaign fund.
Cameron previously ran an unsuccessful campaign against incumbent Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear in 2023. Current poll results show that Cameron has a favorable rating of 64% and an unfavorable rating of 18%, while Barr stands at 46% favorable and 21% unfavorable, with Morris at 27% favorable and 18% unfavorable.
Morris’s campaign emphasizes that he is the only candidate who aligns closely with Trump and presents an outsider’s perspective. His spokesperson, Conor McGuinness, highlighted the challenges Barr faces due to his previous associations and suggested that the Kentucky Republican Party may ultimately reject career politicians like Barr and Cameron.
Barr, on the other hand, is currently leading in fundraising efforts, though Morris, who is largely self-funded, is expected to ramp up his efforts later in 2025. Reports detail that Barr raised approximately $1.4 million recently, while Morris brought in at least $2 million in the last quarter of 2025, primarily from his own resources. As of September 30, Barr had around $6.6 million on hand, while Morris had just over $1 million and Cameron approximately $629,748.
The Republican primary is set for May 19, 2026, and the landscape might shift as candidates gather more support and resources in the lead-up to the election.
