Kid Cudi Removes MIA from Tour After Controversial Comments

Rapper Kid Cudi has decided to part ways with fellow artist MIA for breaching a prior agreement about controversial remarks made during a performance. This move comes after she referred to herself as a “brown Republican” at a concert in Dallas, which didn’t sit well with the audience.

During her performance at the Dos Equis Pavilion, MIA sparked upset when she criticized illegal immigration. This led to boos echoing from the crowd as she self-identified as a “brown Republican.” Cudi later expressed his surprise at being “canceled” for what he described as his political stance.

In a post on Instagram, Kid Cudi revealed that MIA’s management had been alerted before the tour to steer clear of controversial themes, leading him to believe there was a clear understanding in place.

He wrote, “Tour Update: MIA will no longer be on this tour. I had my manager inform her team early on that I wanted to avoid anything offensive at the show. Given my confidence that matters were settled, I am now quite disheartened by the backlash.” He added that many fans had reached out, expressing their offense at her statements, which he found deeply disappointing.

"I cannot have anyone on my tour saying something that could alienate my fans. Thank you for your understanding, Rager," he concluded.

In response, MIA took to X (formerly Twitter) to argue that Cudi’s comments about illegal aliens have been consistent since 2010, and accused him of twisting her words and engaging in “the devil’s work.”

“I wrote the 2010 song ‘ILLYGAL’ on Maya’s LP, starting with a line about being illegal and waiting for a visa. They played a track stating ‘the law is unjust.’ I’ve always believed that. Don’t misinterpret my message. This is about genuine struggles. Jesus was an immigrant and a rebel, and I stand proud with those fighting against injustice,” she stated.

MIA has faced criticism before, notably in 2022 when she shared her views on COVID-19 vaccines, which stirred up significant controversy.

She remarked, “I know people who’ve died from vaccines, and I also know those who died from COVID-19. These experiences are mine. If someone dismisses that, what does that say about our conversation?”
