Judge Fined for Assisting Illegal Immigrant Escape
A judge appointed by Democrats, who assisted an undocumented immigrant in escaping from a courtroom in Wisconsin, was sentenced by a fellow judge, who once held a prominent position in the state’s Democratic leadership. District Judge Lynn Adelman imposed a fine of $5,000 on Judge Hannah Dugan after she pleaded guilty to the crime committed in April 2025. Adelman remarked that “an otherwise good man, upset by this country’s immigration crackdown,” made a poor choice in a brief moment.
This relatively light penalty comes at a time when Americans are increasingly concerned about violent crimes involving undocumented immigrants and the economic strain on families due to the willingness of immigrants to accept low-paying jobs.
Adelman, who previously led the state Assembly as a Democratic chairman, emphasized in court that “the punishment should align with the criminal, not merely the crime.” His comments also suggest a dismissal of the immigration mandate that populist President Donald Trump received from voters in the 2024 election.
As reported by UrbanMilwaukee.com, Dugan, who had previously supported immigration expansion, expressed a lack of remorse regarding her actions, stating, “I was cast as both the culprit and the hero…I was a public servant just trying to do my job.” She noted her intention to return to public service and quoted President Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address to justify her motivations, highlighting a commitment to democracy and “unfinished business.”
“For someone who has dedicated his life to the law, this [trial] amounts to serious punishment,” Adelman explained during the session with Dugan.
Federal authorities sought a prison sentence, while Dugan’s legal team argued for limiting her time to what she had already served. Dugan plans to appeal the fine, with her attorney Jason Ruzak expressing optimism about their chances as the appeal progresses.
Adelman was appointed to the bench by President Bill Clinton in 1997.
