British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has unexpectedly dismissed the UK’s ambassador to the US, Peter Mandelson. An email chain from 2008 surfaced, revealing Mandelson had shown support for Jeffrey Epstein, encouraging him to “fight for early release” on a legal appeal before Epstein’s 18-month prison sentence began. He even commented, “I think it’s your world,” which raises eyebrows.
Stephen Doughty, the Foreign Minister, confirmed in the House that the decision to fire Mandelson was made following the revelation of this email. He stated, “In light of additional information in an email written by Peter Mandelson, the Prime Minister called on the Foreign Secretary to withdraw him as ambassador.” Doughty emphasized that the extent of Mandelson’s connection with Epstein was far more significant than previously known when he was appointed.
The controversy gained traction after a recent release by Democrats in the U.S. House, which included a 2003 birthday album edited by Epstein. Notably, Mandelson referred to Epstein as “my best companion” in a handwritten message.
This situation led to calls for Mandelson’s resignation from various political groups, including Conservatives and the Scottish Nationalist Party, while the Liberal Democrats have requested an investigation. Mandelson, a pivotal player in the Labour Party’s resurgence under Tony Blair, also held significant roles within the government, including trade secretary. He later served as the EU’s trade commissioner before returning to UK politics as a peer.
Mandelson had most recently met with President Donald Trump at the Oval Office regarding a limited US-UK trade agreement. The political fallout from these revelations continues to unfold.
