Quique Hernandez, a beloved player for the Dodgers, is known for his memorable moments in October and his laid-back demeanor. Recently, he found himself in the middle of a heated political discussion after opting out of a White House visit on July 23, which was meant to celebrate the team’s upcoming World Series championship in 2026.
Officially, the 34-year-old missed the trip due to a left oblique strain, as he is focused on recovering in the minor leagues. However, he expressed, “It would be difficult to stay in two cities at the same time,” and then added, more candidly, “If I was active, I probably wouldn’t have gone anyway.”
A fan named Larry wasn’t pleased with Hernandez’s comments and wrote a letter criticizing the player for skipping the visit. He labeled Hernandez as “disrespectful” and “entitled,” reminding him of the Dodgers’ association with the Sisters of Eternal Indulgence, a group that has sparked controversy.
In a surprising move, Hernandez shared the letter, complete with Larry’s return address, with his 1.5 million followers on social media. He responded with sarcasm, thanking Larry for the “lovely letter” and suggesting an idea for future correspondence: “Next time, please at least write by hand!”
Interestingly, he wasn’t alone in his decision. Teammate Mookie Betts is also expected to miss the event. Betts had previously not attended a White House visit after the Boston Red Sox’s championship in 2019.
Hernandez has voiced his opposition to former President Trump’s immigration policies, which might have influenced his decision to skip the White House visit this year. The Dodgers faced a notable controversy in 2025 amid rumors of ICE activity at Dodger Stadium, which later turned out to involve California Border Control agents instead.
The tradition of championship teams visiting the White House has changed, becoming a stage for political expression rather than a purely celebratory occasion. Regardless of opinions on the issue, Hernandez’s choice to expose the fan’s criticism raises questions about the boundaries of athlete-fan interactions.
