Lily Gladstone made history on Sunday as the first Native American woman to win the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture, Drama. Murderers of the Flower Moon.
When Gladstone took to the stage to accept her award, she was given a standing ovation from her colleagues for her win. (This also bodes well for her chances at the Oscars!) Gladstone began her speech by speaking the Blackfeet language. Gladstone grew up on the Blackfeet Reservation in Montana to a white mother and a Blackfeet father.
“I have no words,” Gladstone said in English. “I've only spoken a few words of the Blackfeet language. It's a beautiful country, a beautiful community that raised me and encouraged me to keep going. I'm here with my mom. I grew up as a Blackfoot language teacher, because although I am not Blackfoot, I worked tirelessly to instill our language in the classroom.
Gladstone's words were met with cheers. She continued, “I hope it doesn't count down too soon because it's historic. I'm so grateful that even though I'm here, I can still speak a little bit of my language, which I'm not fluent in, because… Because in this industry, native actors were speaking their lines in English. The sound mixer runs them backwards to achieve the native language on camera.
Gladstone said: “This is a historic victory. It's not just me. I have it now, along with all the beautiful sisters who appear in the film, and my mother, Tantu Cardinal. I am standing on your shoulders.”
