Accident During North Korean Naval Launch
State media has reported a significant mishap during a naval launch ceremony in North Korea, which resulted in damage to newly built destroyers. Kim Jong-un expressed his anger over the incident, labeling it a “criminal act” that undermined the respect of the nation.
According to the South Korean Central News Agency, the accident occurred on Wednesday during the launch of a new 5,000-ton destroyer in the eastern port city of Jeongjin.
Kim attended the event and criticized the “inexperienced command and operational carelessness” that led to the incident, stating that it caused “crushing damage” to parts of the warship. He claimed this accident jeopardized the vessel’s balance, and reports indicated that some warships were partially submerged.
Reflecting on the situation, Kim suggested that the event dealt a blow to the nation’s dignity and self-esteem, emphasizing that the restoration of the destroyers is not merely a technical issue but one tied directly to national authority.
He expressed that the “irresponsible mistake” made by the party’s leader would be addressed in an upcoming central committee meeting next month.
Recently, Pyongyang also unveiled plans for another 5,000-ton destroyer named Cho Ha-ion. During the announcement, images showed Kim at a ceremony with his daughter, Ju Ae, who is considered by many experts as a potential successor.
North Korea claims that the vessels are armed with “the most powerful weapons” and will be operational early next year. Some analysts speculate that the ships might carry short-range tactical nuclear missiles, although North Korea has yet to demonstrate the ability to miniaturize its nuclear arsenal.
South Korean military experts believe that the Cho Ha-ion could be a result of collaboration with Russia, suggesting that North Korea has deployed soldiers to assist Moscow amid its conflict with Ukraine.
Chongjin, where the launch took place, is strategically located near Russia’s Vladivostok port. A recent report from the U.S.-based group 38 North pointed out that this particular destroyer was likely launched using a side-launch method that hasn’t been previously seen in North Korea. The report indicated that this method might have been necessary due to the design of the quay where the ship was built.
