North Korea’s Kim Jong Un Reacts to US-South Korea Military Exercises
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un recently addressed the joint military operations being conducted by the United States and South Korea, urging a swift increase in the nation’s nuclear arsenal.
As reported by North Korean state media, Kim characterized the military drills as “a clear expression of the will to cause war.” The annual military training, dubbed the Ulchi Freedom Shield, is set to commence this week and will extend into September.
Officials in North Korea perceive the training as a manifestation of hostility from the US and South Korea. Consequently, they argue that it is imperative for North Korea to “expand” its nuclear capabilities. Hong Min, a North Korean expert at a South Korean research institute, suggested in remarks to Reuters that North Korea seems resolute in rejecting any denuclearization efforts and is instead committed to upgrading its nuclear stockpile.
The situation has escalated following South Korean President Lee Jae-myung’s announcement of plans to halt multiple military activities near the North. He also intends to revive the 2018 military agreement with North Korea.
This agreement had previously led to the cessation of certain military operations along the border, creating buffer regions both on land and at sea. Restrictions were placed on airspace above the border to minimize conflicts, and military training activities were concluded in the area, resulting in the removal of several guard posts along the demilitarized zone.
Though this deal originated from the 2018 inter-Korean summit, it deteriorated over time amidst rising cross-border tensions.
In a further bid to reduce tensions, South Korea has dismantled propaganda loudspeakers along the border that had been used to broadcast critical messages about North Korea for years.
Lee indicated that his administration remains committed to taking gradual steps to restore the September 19 military agreement while expressing hope that North Korea will also contribute to rebuilding trust and reinitiating dialogue.
