North Korean Leader’s Daughter Takes on Leadership Role

Reports from South Korean media indicate that Kim Jong Un’s teenage daughter has recently been given a significant position within North Korea’s Missile Control Agency, which is responsible for managing the nation’s nuclear weapons. The girl, thought to be around 13 or 14 years old, has been described as the “missile chief” according to a South Korean intelligence assessment released on Sunday, during the ongoing 9th Workers’ Party Congress.

A senior source familiar with the situation shared that although Chang Chan-ha officially holds the title of chief executive, it appears Kim’s daughter is actively involved, receiving briefings from military generals and presumably issuing directives.

The National Intelligence Service of South Korea mentioned that her public appearances suggest she is in the process of being groomed as a successor. There are indications that she may begin to participate in discussions surrounding policy matters, as noted by the Associated Press.

Her involvement in high-profile military events, such as intercontinental ballistic missile launches, has been notable. The North Korean state media first acknowledged her existence in November 2022, referring to her as a “beloved child” when she accompanied Kim during a missile launch, although her actual name hasn’t been officially disclosed.

This emerging role comes at a time when Kim Jong Un has been showcasing advancements in North Korea’s weapons capabilities. Recently, he was spotted in Pyongyang with a next-generation nuclear-capable rocket launcher, which has been described as highly advanced and a game-changer in modern artillery. Reports noted that Kim claims the rocket, which employs artificial intelligence for guidance, is on par with short-range ballistic missiles.

As previously reported, Kim was re-elected as general secretary of the Workers’ Party of Korea on February 22, a decision made public following the party’s ninth congress.

Since the breakdown of diplomatic talks with the U.S. and South Korea in 2019—stemming from disagreements over sanctions and nuclear program reductions—North Korea has largely put meaningful diplomacy on hold.
