Beverly Hills school board candidate Kim Lifschitz finds herself under scrutiny this week, facing allegations of antisemitism. This stems from screenshots that suggest she mocked a trustee’s visit to the Western Wall in Jerusalem. Additionally, comments made by her husband during a Twitch livestream featuring streamer Hasan Piker have resurfaced, contributing to the controversy.
The controversial messages, purportedly from Lifschitz, were responses to a Beverly Hills Standard article discussing Russell Stuart’s visit to one of Judaism’s holiest sites on New Year’s Day. One specific message mocked his kippah, the Jewish head covering, stating, “Maybe he can bust out the kippah from his dress up trunk.” Later messages continued this theme, joking about the kippah being used to store “complimentary in-flight nuts.”
Stuart, who is Jewish, expressed his dismay over the comments, asserting that such mockery blurred the line between political criticism and disrespect towards religious beliefs. He remarked, “I found them deeply offensive… using a kippah as a punchline trivializes its significance.” His visits to the Western Wall hold personal significance for him, he added.
In response, Lifschitz defended herself, claiming the messages were shared in a private group chat nearly a year ago. She indicated that her critique was focused on Stuart’s alleged use of Jewish symbols for political gain rather than a direct attack on his religious practices. “I said nothing antisemitic at all,” she asserted, arguing that it was Stuart who disrespected Jewish culture in that instance.
Further complicating matters, a newly circulated message from Lifschitz also appeared to mock a fellow board member, Sigalie Sabag, regarding discussions about Holocaust survivors. This has added fuel to the fire, with Stuart labeling those remarks antisemitic and urging Lifschitz to confront them directly.
California GOP Jewish Engagement Chair Elizabeth Barcohana has criticized Lifschitz’s candidacy, accusing her of being “prejudiced” and lacking seriousness about educational issues. Lifschitz confronted this by invoking her own experiences with antisemitism, explaining that such experiences shaped her perspective on Stuart’s motives.
The controversy has gained attention as Lifschitz campaigns for a position on the BHUSD Board of Education ahead of the November 3 election. In previous interviews, she has emphasized the importance of setting a positive example for students. However, the scrutiny surrounding her and her husband continues to grow, raising questions about their suitability for positions in education.
Lifschitz’s husband, Daniel, also encountered backlash for remarks made during a livestream with Hasan Piker, where he criticized the district’s approach to antisemitism. In that clip, Piker made controversial comparisons regarding the display of Israeli flags. Lifschitz previously sought to distance her candidacy from his remarks, asserting that the content aired without their invitation.
Lifschitz has maintained that private discussions among adults should be acceptable, framing the situation as an unfair attack by those who may disagree with her views. She emphasized the complexity of these issues, alluding to the broader context of parental control over educational policies and spending in Beverly Hills, a point echoed by Barcohana, who highlighted recent improvements in the local educational system.
