Kimmel pokes fun at Walz after interview gaffe about ‘waking up on November 6 with Madam President’

Democratic Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz raised some eyebrows about what he was up to during his first appearance on the late-night show “Jimmy Kimmel Live” on Nov. 6. .

On Monday, Walz and liberal host Jimmy Kimmel criticized Republican rival J.D. Trump for refusing to say during last week's vice presidential debate that he lost the 2020 election. He took turns attacking Sen. Vance (R-Ohio).

Walz called the song “very surreal” to hear, but pivoted to his optimism that the country would “turn the page” on Election Day.

“For me, and I'm an eternal optimist, I always say that. I oversaw a high school lunch room. Be an optimist or die,” Walz said. “This idea, look, we can turn the page on it, and I'm going to wake up with Madam President on November 6th.”

As the liberal audience cheered, Kimmel jokingly asked for clarification.

“Just to be clear, you guys are not going to wake up together,” Kimmel replied with a laugh.

“No,” Waltz laughed.

“Unless you guys are closer than we thought,” Kimmel quipped.

“I have a problem with my language not being specific. So thank you, that's exactly what I'm saying,” Waltz laughed.

The ill-timed incident came as Walz was asked about a change in his position on banning assault weapons, which he previously opposed but now supports. Walz said he has become friends with parents who lost children in school shootings.

He also made headlines for calling himself a “knucklehead” after being investigated for lying about being in Hong Kong during the Tiananmen Square massacre.

During an interview on “60 Minutes,” Walz was asked if he could be trusted because other past statements have come under intense scrutiny.

“Wouldn't that kind of misrepresentation be more than just a knucklehead?” asked CBS News' Bill Whitaker.

“I think people know who I am, and I think people who express emotions, tell stories, get dates wrong, and people who are pathological liars like Donald Trump. I think you know the difference between,” Walz said.

“But I think it comes down to whether you can be trusted to tell the truth,” Whitaker continued.

“Oh, yeah, you can do it. I think you can,” Walz replied.

“I admit that I am a stooge at times, but those closest to me know that I am a man of my word,” Walz added.
