Jimmy Kimmel’s Future at ABC in Uncertain Territory
The future of Jimmy Kimmel as the iconic face of ABC is currently in limbo. This follows Disney’s decision to bench the late-night host indefinitely due to his controversial comments regarding the assassination of conservative figure Charlie Kirk.
On Wednesday, Disney made it clear that Kimmel would remain sidelined indefinitely. This move aligns with the sentiments of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) across the nation.
Kimmel had intended to address this escalating debate during his monologue that night. However, Dana Walden, co-chair of Disney Entertainment and a close ally of Kimmel, felt that what he planned to say might worsen the situation.
Mixed Reactions from Conservatives
Sources revealed that both Walden and Disney CEO Bob Iger chose to have Kimmel take a step back. It seems their primary focus was to safeguard the Disney brand. Yet, it’s worth noting that Kimmel’s role extends beyond just being a late-night host; he represents much more.
Earlier this year, CBS made headlines by announcing the cancellation of Stephen Colbert’s “Late Show,” which left many in the industry reeling. Some speculated that it was a strategic move influenced by the Trump administration to appease the FCC in light of ongoing corporate mergers. However, it turned out that Colbert’s show had been losing money, sparking a realization that it didn’t perform well on digital platforms.
Matthew Veroni from Pack commented on a podcast that Kimmel, in contrast, is profitable. “He’s not just hosting a show; he’s involved in much more for the network,” Veroni noted, adding that Kimmel is essentially the face of the brand.
Comments Prompt Disney’s Response
Following Kimmel’s comments about Kirk’s assassination, Disney announced that his show would be preempted indefinitely. Kimmel has garnered multiple awards over the years, including American Music Awards, Primetime Emmys, and Academy Awards. His influence extends to Disney’s presentations to advertisers as well, where he plays a major role.
Though “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” has seen a decline in viewer ratings recently, its YouTube channel boasts nearly 21 million subscribers—far more than the “Late Show.” In fact, Kimmel’s recent monologue gained over 4.1 million views.
The future for Kimmel remains uncertain. Disney has not responded to inquiries regarding the next airing of “Who Wants to Be a Billionaire?” or the status of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”
Earlier, Kimmel expressed that his current contract, set to expire in 2026, might be his last. “I often think about it, but there’s no easy answer,” he said, hinting at the changing landscape of late-night television.
Kimmel’s Initial Plans
Kimmel reportedly had plans to defend his comments about Kirk and criticize Trump supporters during his monologue before Disney’s intervention. Bill Simmons, the founder of The Ringer, reflected on his long-standing relationship with Kimmel, suggesting that ABC may not be willing to let go of him as easily as they might think.
“Colbert doesn’t feel like the face of CBS, but Jimmy does with ABC,” Simmons argued. He reminisced about a time when network stars were closely associated with their channels, countering that the current media climate is different.
Simmons pointed out that the growing backlash against Disney this week might lead them to reconsider their stance on Kimmel. He suggested that losing Kimmel could rob Disney of its identity. Around 200 protesters gathered outside Disney’s Burbank location, demanding the network reinstate “Jimmy Kimmel Live!”
Simmons concluded that Kimmel’s significance to ABC is substantial. With the modern landscape allowing creators to establish their platforms, he emphasized the importance of Kimmel to the network, hinting that the balance of power could be shifting.
