King Charles' former butler reveals Prince Philip's swearing habits

Prince Philip was known for his candid remarks, and it seems palace staff quickly learned to adapt to his outspoken nature.

Grant Harold, a former butler to Charles III, has recently shared insights in his memoir titled “Royal Butler: My Amazing Life in Royal Service.” In this book, he recounts how the Duke of Edinburgh had a particular way of expressing himself during Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding in 2018.

Once the ceremony concluded, Harold noted that as Philip exited the chapel, he turned to the Queen and exclaimed, “Thank you f—, it’s over.”

This candid moment sheds light on Philip’s reputation for being rather blunt. Harold elaborated, indicating this was not an isolated incident; the Duke was known for his colorful language. “He didn’t hold back,” he said, emphasizing that remarks like these were part of who Philip was.

Harold, who served the royal family from 2004 to 2011, remarked that such humor was a recurring theme during his interactions with Philip. He remembers a time in the dining room when he spotted Prince Philip wandering around, which elicited surprised reactions from the staff.

“I think they were a little nervous about him,” Harold chuckled, reflecting on Philip’s unique personality. “He wasn’t exactly the poster boy for charm, but I admired him for that very reason.” The way he engaged with the rigorous protocols was, well, Philip being Philip.

Harold described the royal household as an elaborate operation, often requiring strict adherence to schedules and instructions. Yet, Philip would frequently question the rationale behind it all, showing his inquisitive side.

For instance, during an event commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, Philip was caught on camera expressing frustration with a photographer. Such instances were, in fact, part and parcel of his public persona. As a royal expert noted, Philip’s comments often put him in hot water, reflecting a character that was both enthusiastic yet unfiltered.

Over the years, Philip became known for his odd yet humorous observations. His remarks about his daughter Anne’s equestrian interests, stating, “If it doesn’t fart or eat hay, she’s not interested,” highlighted this playful side. Yet, other comments, like the one about the Duchess of York, demonstrated a more controversial edge.

Despite past criticisms labeling him as racist or blunt, Philip’s enduring legacy is that of a dedicated supporter of Queen Elizabeth II and the royal family, participating in over 20,000 engagements throughout his lifetime. He passed away in 2021 at the age of 99.
