King Charles III to Meet NYC Mayor During US Trip
Next week, King Charles III is set to meet New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani during his state visit to the United States, as confirmed by his office on Saturday.
On Wednesday, the king and the mayor will participate in a wreath-laying ceremony at the 9/11 Memorial in New York City.
Before that, King Charles will arrive in Washington, D.C., on Monday, where a reception with President Donald Trump at the White House is scheduled.
After landing at Joint Base Andrews, the king and Queen Camilla will have a private tea with First Lady Melania Trump.
It’s significant that King Charles’ visit is described as “high-stakes”; some experts suggest this historic alliance could potentially influence his reign.
On Tuesday, King Charles will engage in bilateral discussions with President Trump and is also expected to address Parliament—making him the first British monarch to do so since his mother, Queen Elizabeth, in 1991.
The evening will wrap up with a state dinner at the White House, after which the King and Queen will head to New York on Wednesday.
However, Mayor Mamdani’s press secretary, Joe Calvello, clarified that the mayor doesn’t plan to meet King Charles personally. He mentioned that Mamdani is invited to the ceremony alongside other elected officials and members of the British Royal Family.
Interestingly, 67 British nationals were among those who lost their lives during the 9/11 attacks.
Later in the week, on Thursday, King Charles will travel to Virginia to meet with Native American and Appalachian cultural groups, concluding his trip at a block party celebrating the 250th anniversary of American independence.
During an interaction with a BBC reporter, President Trump expressed that he believes the king’s visit will likely ease existing tensions between the U.S. and Britain—tensions that have recently arisen due to Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s hesitance about joining military actions against Iran.
Trump shared that he knows the king well, emphasizing his respect for him. He remarked that the upcoming visit would “definitely be a plus.” The president last visited the UK in September, which included a state dinner at Windsor Castle.
