Kinzinger says JD Vance's response to shooting should 'disqualify' him from VP consideration

Former Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.) said Sunday that Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio)’s response to the assassination attempt on former President Trump should “disqualify” him from serving as vice president.

Vance, one of Trump’s running mates, said in a social media post on Saturday that the shooting was “not an isolated incident” and suggested President Biden’s campaign was at least partly to blame.

“The central premise of the Biden campaign is that President Donald Trump is an authoritarian fascist who must be stopped at all costs.” Vance says on social platform X. “Those comments directly led to the assassination attempt on President Trump.”

Kinzinger was once a Republican congressman but has since become a frequent critic of Trump. I responded to Vance’s post.“This definitely should remove @JDVance1 as a running mate.”

Vance’s statement came just hours after Trump was hastily removed from the stage at a rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday after apparently being injured in what authorities are calling an assassination attempt.

At the time of Vance’s statement, the shooter’s motive or other details about the incident had not been released.

Republicans and Democrats alike are calling for a tone-down in political rhetoric.

President Biden has ordered an overhaul of security for President Trump’s Saturday rally and an evaluation of security for the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee this week.

The Hill has reached out to Vance’s campaign for a response.
